The purpose of business marketing is to convert
strangers into clients but that's much easier said
than done!
Most of us have more than sufficient technical and
other skills in whatever products or services we
offer to do the job, but very few of us have had
formal marketing training.
Consequently we spend most of our time on the
technical stuff - which often has very little to
do with our business success - your success
depends on your marketing, not your price or
service or products. Even if you have the best
product or service in the world, but nobody knows
about it you simply cannot convert strangers into
clients and thus make money.
Normal small businesses don't have the money, time
or patience to invest in proper marketing
campaigns - so we don't. But we don't do any other
marketing either! And that's a real problem for
most of us because marketing is expensive.
In fact, marketing is unfair towards nearly all
small businesses in the sense that they are not
only overwhelmed by the millions that big
corporations invest in marketing, but also because
nearly all big marketing websites and printed
media are owned by multi-million rand
organisations.
The big corporations pours a lot of money into
marketing and with such advertisements not only
reaching a larger market, but also convincing the
customers that their product and/or service is the
best and cheapest.
This leads to an interesting trend where they
increase their prices a lot to cover the huge
marketing expenses and still earn a decent and
sometimes record profit while customers believe
that the much cheaper products or services from
smaller companies are of poor quality due to the
low prices.
The results of this is that those small businesses
that actually spend money on marketing also have
the problem to convince customers otherwise and
therefore get even less response from their
smaller marketing campaigns.
Ultimately their income is much lower and they
therefore have less money to spend on marketing
and that only make the situation even worst.
